Baptism is the first and essential Sacrament for a Christian. It is the doorway through which one enters the pathway that leads to eternal life. Cleansed from sin and infused with the graces of the Holy Spirit, the newly baptized Christian begins the journey toward God.
The Sacrament of Baptism is typically celebrated during 10 am Mass on the second Sunday of the month.
Private baptisms may be scheduled on Saturdays with opportunities in the morning, afternoon, or after 5 pm Mass depending on availability.
Baptisms cannot be celebrated during the Lenten season.A Sponsor, or Godparent, is one who assists an adult in Christian initiation or together with the parents presents an infant for baptism. A sponsor also helps the baptized person to lead a Christian life in keeping with baptism and to fulfill faithfully the obligations inherent in it (Can. 872).
While there can be many special individuals in a child's life there are certain requirements for those who can serve officially as Godparents at a Catholic baptism. Only one Godparent is required, but if two are selected, one must be male and one must be female. According to Canon Law, to be a Godparent, an individual must be a baptized and confirmed Catholic, over the age of 16, who is a registered member of a parish.
For non-parishioners, a letter from their pastor is required stating that they meet these requirements. Provided one Catholic Godparent is selected, a non-Catholic may serve as a Christian Witness. According to Canon Law, to be a Christian Witness, an individual must be a baptized Christian who practices their faith.
